To Narobi

Today was an early but beautiful day.  At 5am the electricity in the camp turns on, so we were up getting ready for our last game drive to begin at 6am.  We set out to the reserve when it was still dark and were able to watch the sun rise over the Serengeti.  Once again I was having a bit of stomach issues, which I believe I have finally identified as side effects from my Malaria pills when I take them on an empty stomach.  Due to this I did not enjoy the first few minutes of the morning drive, but the sickness passed by the time we came across a male lion dragging a Masai cow across the Serengeti.  We watched him drag the massive beast for nearly 20 minutes, it was such an incredible sight.  Shortly after we stumbled upon a vulture fighting with some jackals over leftover scraps of food.  Of course we couldn’t enter the Masai Mara without seeing herds of elephants, giraffes, and zebras, a sight I will never forget.

We are on our way back to Nairobi right now and we are going to spend the night at Katrice’s place before we head to Arusha, Tanzania on the bus early tomorrow.  Originally we were planning on staying with a local friend named Alex, but since we are leaving so early in the morning we decided to spend the night closer to the city center and in a place that actually has good internet.  When we start our hike up Kilimanjaro on May 8, we will have no internet or electricity for 6 days.  Life in the bush is great!

Once again I cannot stop raving about the food here.  They actually serve fruits, vegetables, meats, and whole grains here.  The food is much cleaner and healthier than the average meal in the United States for sure.  Most of the dishes are meat, bean, and vegetable curries served with chapati and rice.

Katrice, the water enginerr in South Sudan that I was talking about earlier, offered to let us stay in her home in Nairobi for the evening.  Her home is absolutely beautiful and is decorated with artwork and decorations from all aroudn the world.  She took us on a quick walk through some of the streets in Narobi, showed us her favorite markets, and let us help her cook a delicious vegetable stew for dinner.  We were able to take hot showers and get clean, wash our clothes, and use her fast internet (all things that we have not been able to do in a while.)  We leave for Arusha on a bus from the Nairobi City center tomorrow at 8am, so I better jump in bed as it is getting quite late here!  I am not sure when you will hear from me again, because we will spend the next week hiking Kilimanjaro and will definately not have internet access… Until later!
